On the August 26th, 2022, the industry hub uptownBasel and the interdisciplinary research network Responsible Digital Society (RDS) of the University of Basel hosted a movie screening on the topic of cyber security followed by a panel discussion in the event hall on the Schorenareal in Arlesheim.

Around 30 guests from politics, research, education, and business followed the invitation of uptownBasel and the RDS to join us in an exclusive movie night and panel discussion about cyber security. Due to the weather conditions, the event was moved from the rooftop terrace to one of uptownBasels event halls, but this did not detract from the industrial charm of the Schorenareal.

Equipped with fresh popcorn and homemade iced tea, the guests were first welcomed by Dr. Thomas Staehelin (uptownBasel Board President) and Prof. Dr. Torsten Schwede (Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Basel). The opening was followed by the screening of a current documentary on the highly relevant topic of cyber security. The panel discussion was moderated by Urs Gredig (SRF). The discussion focused on the various aspects and risks of cyber attacks. Danielle Kaufmann (data protection officer at the University of Basel), Prof. Dr. Oliver Nachtwey (Professor for Social Structure Analysis at the University of Basel), and Dr. Christopher Scherb, (lecturer at the FHNW and the University of Basel). Due to the thematically wide-ranging composition of the panel, various aspects were included in the discussion: How can KMUs protect themselves against hacker attacks without suffering economic damage? How can we protect ourselves as individuals? Are we more susceptible to targeted false reports via social media? How do you teach the media skills needed to deal with current challenges? Last but not least, the discussion was also about the question of possible solutions and the need for new frameworks. It is precisely such questions that concern the researchers of the RDS. The network offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange. The focus is on the digital transformation and its social, ethical, legal, economic, psychological, and political consequences. This transformation is of concern to all of us, which is why it needs to be addressed from multiple perspectives.

After the panel discussion, the guests and speakers had the opportunity to take up and deepen questions and thoughts in personal conversations.

The event on August 26, 2022 marks the start of a joint series of events by uptownBasel and the Responsible Digital Society research network.
