On June 5, 2023, the interdisciplinary research network Responsible Digital Society (RDS) of the University of Basel organized the colloquium "ChatGPT Demystified: Insights into Development, Ethics & Sustainability, and Real-World Use Cases" at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.

AI programs that enable conversational interactions, with ChatGPT being the most well-known, are currently a hot topic. They present various challenges in both our private and professional lives. The audience that gathered at the Biozentrum of the university was as diverse as these challenges, including members of the university's research, teaching, and administration sectors, as well as students, alumni, and the general public.

After a welcome address by Professor Heiko Schuldt, representing the steering committee of the research network, speaker Fatos Ismali from Microsoft AI provided valuable insights into the development and application of ChatGPT and similar technologies in a packed auditorium. The ensuing discussion revealed critical points, open questions, and sometimes concerns, highlighting the need for a broad discourse on this topic. One important aspect is the responsible use of such programs and the necessary background knowledge that must be conveyed accordingly. Legal questions, such as those related to intellectual property, and ethical questions, such as fairness, also require ongoing debate.

After the colloquium, an aperitif was offered, giving guests the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with each other.

The Responsible Digital Society research network regularly organizes colloquia and other public events related to the topic of digitization.
