Dr. Iain McGilchrist: The hemisphere lateralization hypothesis and our approach to basic research

[in englischer Sprache] Auftakt CeDA Kolloquium

Dr. Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and philosopher best known for his books “The Master and His Emissary” and “The Matter With Things”. In these works, he compiles a wide body of research from science, philosophy and history, demonstrating that the two hemispheres of our brain
have fundamentally different ways of attending to the world. He discusses the impact of this tension on our cultural evolution, as well as how it relates to epistemology and metaphysics.

In this colloquium, Dr. McGilchrist will discuss the implications of his lateralization hypothesis on our approach to basic research, particularly in the life sciences. This will be followed by a round table discussion with Professor Cristina Granziera of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Professor Philipp Sterzer at the Psychiatric Hospital UPK.

Dr. McGilchrist will also be speaking in Geneva on May 8th at IdeaSquare (CERN) and May 9th at The Fab (the Graduate Institute).
