Our third edition of RDS Movie-Night series, this time with the swiss premier of a documentary looking at the crypto currency industry.
On October 20 2026 the RDS once again took over the Stadtkino Basel to screen a movie and discuss its themes over drinks and nibbles.
For this edition of the RDS Movie Night we tried something different, showcasing the swiss cinematic premiere ofEveryone is Lying to You for Money, by Ben McKenzie, the The OC guy. As well as a former teenage heartthrob, McKenzie has a degree in economics and is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud with journalist Jacob Silverman (Abrams Press, 2023).
During the hight of the COVID-19 pandemic, McKenzie starts a deepdive into crypto currency, investigating the firms and people behind them. He gradually starts pulling back the curtain on the cryptocurrency industry and the culture of hype, misinformation, and speculation that fueled its explosive rise. As he sees it, what began as a promise of financial freedom has evolved into a volatile ecosystem rife with fraud and reckless gambling, carrying with it potentially devastating consequences for everyday people.
Following the film, participants engaged in relaxed conversations about the film over drinks and seasonal canapés in the cinema's foyer, where we were able to dicuss some of the topics raised by the film and critically engage with some of the questions posed.
Should you have a suggestion for a film or documentary for a future RDS Movie Night we'd be very happy to hear from you.
